This Week's Event Picks are Here!
Get Your Fun Fix :)
Good morning, dear readers!
There’s been quite a lot of you who joined since the first edition, so let me try to recap what my goal is here: I try to keep all the events nice and neat with descriptive titles and short texts. I also try to include only free or relatively affordable events so you won’t have to break the bank.
So… Are you ready to spice up your week with some AWESOME events? I’ve got an amazing line-up that will keep you entertainedTM! And fear not, if you can’t make it to one event, there’ll be plenty more to choose from throughout the week. So, get your fill of culture in this weird but beautiful land of Legos and Liquorice! Let’s get started!
BOOKS BEFORE LOOKS – I’m about to let you in on a little secret. Hidden amongst the endless sea of Danish library events (if you know, you know) is a true gem - an English book club! And not just any book club, mind you. This one focuses on the New Immigrant Literature genre, delving into the experiences of those who have made the journey to America. Even if you haven’t been an immigrant in America yourself, you’ve probably heard enough stories to know the drill. But reading the unique perspectives of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Jhumpa Lahiri might just broaden your understanding of the immigrant experience, so don’t forget to check it out.
Time: Every Monday - 19:00 - 21:00 / Price: Free / Location: Sundby Library (Jemtelandsgade 3)
TALK THE TALK – A recurring language practice event has started at Valby Bibliotek. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro (although if you’re already a pro, I don’t know why you would want to further your skills, I mean isn’t it enough for you already?), you can practice your Danish without fear of judgment (unless you’re pronouncing “rødgrød med fløde” wrong, in which case they might judge you a little). From my understanding, it’s a light and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for brushing up on your Danish skills. Unfortunately I slave away at work on Tuesday nights, but I encourage you to go and maybe even bring some friends along to torture them with your Danish pronunciation!
Time: Every Tuesday - 16:30-18:00 / Price: Free / Location: Valby Library (Annexstræde 2)
WATCH & CHILL – There’s something about watching classic movies on the big screen that makes me feel like I’m living in a time when people actually dressed up to go to the cinema. And Singin’ In the Rain screening at Husets Biograf definitely fits that bill. So for the love of everything that is good and holy, please forget about streaming movies on your phone, and join us cool kids at the cinema!
Time: Wednesday, 26 April - 19:00-21:00 / Price: 70 DKK / Location: Husets Biograf (Rådhusstræde 13)
CAREER RELATED – As a music licensing expert, Mara Deuschle will share insights into her career, opportunities in the industry, and why licensing matters for entrepreneurs small businesses. Spaces are limited so RSVP quick, if this is the kind of career talk you are interested in.
Time: Wednesday, 26 April - 18:00-21:00 / Price: Free / Location: Brolæggerstræde 6
GREEN SCENE – A unique twist to mushroom growing by using coffee ground waste from local cafes and Studenterhuset. The event team will provide the initial substrate and containers so you can start growing your own tiny little shroom babies at home! Don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited to give mushroom growing a try. I can’t even keep a succulent alive, but I have a feeling that mushrooms will thrive in the constant darkness of my tiny Copenhagen apartment!
Time: Thursday, 27 April - 19:30 / Price: Free / Location: Studenterhuset (Købmagergade 52)
FRIDAY NIGHT SHENANIGANS – Get your sunscreen and flip-flops out of the depths of your cupboards and get ready for… yet another freezing Danish spring night? Springs in this country might not be quite the summer kick-off you had in mind, but in any case, ÅBEN Brewery in Copenhagen is starting the season with an opening party. We are promised DJ’s, delicious food, cold beers, but let’s face it, what we’re really after are those elusive summer vibes. Will they deliver? One way to find out…
Time: Friday, 28 April - Starting from 12:00 until 2:00 / Price: Entrance is free
Location: ÅBEN Brewery, Tank Bar & Restaurant (Slagtehusgade 15)
FESTIVAL & COMMUNITY – There’s a new festival in town! Four recent films will be screened, each showcasing the multifaceted aspects of Palestine – from a heartbreaking documentary about the conflict to dramas that depict life in the region then and now. There will also be music, talks, and exciting guests to help you explore and learn more about Palestine and its culture. (Note that the talks are going to be in Danish, but all the films have English subtitles.)
Time: Friday & Saturday, 28-29 April - Screening times differ / Price: 100 DKK per ticket
Location: Cinemateket (Gothersgade 55)
FESTIVAL & COMMUNITY – Join the rebellion against fast-fashion and clothing waste –if you haven’t already– but this time with creativity, and upcycling at Denmark’s first-ever Craftivism Festival. You’ll get a free meal if you sign up to this one-day event. Plus, there will be an array of workshops. The website is in Danish so it looks as if the events too will be held in, well, Danish, but don’t you worry, I have been assured that they will also be held in English for all of us internationals struggling with the language.
Time: Saturday, 29 April / Price: Free
Location: Various events at libraries throughout Denmark (more info on website). Festival is at Kildevæld Cultural Center (Bellmansgade 5C).
STREET PARTY – Join me in Vesterbro for the annual Street Party! With live music, vintage treasures, tasty food, and lots and lots of tasty beer. We’re not talking just any beer, we’re talking FREE BEER! They’re closing down the street to traffic so grab your pals, take them by the arm if you need to, and get ready to party like it’s whatever year you’d want it to be!
Time: Saturday, 29 April / Price: Free / Location: Mikkeller Bar (Viktoriagade 8B-C)
And voila! That’s it for this week’s selection of events that caught my attention. For those of you who spend endless hours searching for something to do, struggle to make plans, or wind up doing the same old thing in the same old places, I hope these options serve as refreshing alternatives. My aim is to keep you updated about popular and budget-friendly events taking place in Denmark so whether you’re a film buff or a language aficionado, I trust that you’ll discover some great events to explore via these lists.
XOXO “upper east siders” :)
See you next week!
