Week 18
Hi everyone,
This week, we have several venue and garden openings, and most events are somewhat related to spring of course! :) Additionally, we have two interesting film "festivals," along with some yoga and chess events, all from Copenhagen. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to include events from other cities again. If those of you living in other cities find this as annoying as I do, you are more than welcome to help me curate these lists :)
Alright, here we go:
28 April: Human Library Opening — The Reading Garden is opening its doors again! Show up at the library desk, receive guidance from the librarians about the subjects available, and collect your “human book” to have an open conversation about the subject you have chosen. Free entry
30 April: Pysanka Workshop — A meditative evening of traditional Ukrainian egg decorating, where you’ll learn how to transform a simple egg into a vibrant masterpiece using wax and dyes. 150 DKK
1 May: Salsa & Bachata Wednesday — Ofelia Beach is once again the place to be if you want to get some intro classes to salsa and show your dance moves at the open air dance party that happens every Wednesday until the summer’s over. Free event
2 May: Plant Workshop — Make seedbombs and plant small plants that you can take home. Everything is provided: seeds, plants, soil, pots and tools! Free entry
3 May: Re-opening of Øens Have — These are the couple of weeks when every single venue with a garden will celebrate spring with garden re-opening parties :) They’ve already started, actually. So, if you have a favorite spot that also has a garden (which cannot be used for pretty much 8 months a year, ffs) check their events page; they probably have some sort of celebration going on with probably free drinks/food and live music. But at this event, you also get a free tour of the garden. Free entry
3 May: Heterotopia: The Living Souls of Assistens Cemetery — Australian photographer George Doumani has explored local life in Assistens Cemetery and his portrait series captures the essence of those who find moments of life within this cemetery. Free entry
4 May: Craftivism Festival 2024 — Last year I was told the events within the festival were English-friendly so I’m gonna go ahead and assume the same thing this year :) There will be fun repair and upcycling workshops and a communal dining. Meal costs 69 DKK but the festival is free.
4 May: Checkmates at Jolene — Listen to vinyl records and play chess with some drinks and vegan food. Free entry
4 May: Yoga for Marathon Runners — This free yoga session takes place the day before the Copenhagen Marathon and open for everyone to join. Free event
4 May: Viktoriagade Street Party — As is customary every year, Mikkeller will once again host a street party complete with a loppemarked, DJs, and food and drinks. Following last year's tradition, they might also be closing the street for the event this year. Free entry
5 May: Yoga Drop-in Classes — I share this recurring event from time to time since there are new subscriber to the newsletter. This class is open for everyone and no experience is needed. 60-75 DKK
5 May: Loppemarked — This loppemarked takes place five times a year at Rådhuspladsen, and if the weather's nice and you're planning to be in the city center on Sunday, this flea market is a nice way to start your day plans. DKK
1 May-24 June: Steven Soderbergh films — Here’s a pretty exciting series from Cinemateket: A Soderbergh screening. If you’re a fan, you might want to go and rewatch some old classics, if you don’t know who he is I’m sure you’ll find a few films to your liking so don’t forget to check the program.
2-25 May: Transnational Adoption films — Another very interesting film series is coming up. If you've been following the news, then you know adoption has been a controversial issue in Denmark. Within the festival, along with films about adoption, there will be debates and speeches featuring many panelists, including filmmakers, writers, activists, and more, all of whom are themselves adopted. The films are subtitled in English, but most talks are in Danish, of course. However, check the event pages; there might be some in English as well.
For those looking for a different activity: How about exploring Copenhagen at your own pace with a free walking tour? “Click a Story” is a free app offering tour guides with directions, offline maps, thematic city walks, and stories of Copenhagen's local legends. With the app, you not only get directions to the most interesting sights and the stories behind them but also a glimpse into the loves and lives of local legends.
That’s it from this week! If you have events you think would benefit from being featured here, you’re more than welcome to send them my way.
I wish you a great week, and hope to see you next Saturday!
